A Secure Patient Data Sharing Platform for RxLive
How an innovative Value-Based Pharmacy balanced the need for shared patient data with HIPAA privacy rule compliance.
Challenge: Compliant Data Sharing
Value-Based Care (VBC), a health care delivery model in which providers are paid based on patient outcomes, is on the rise. RxLive is a VBC-enabling platform that gives patients access to expert medication management by connecting them with a “personal pharmacist” in a secure, private telehealth setting.
Compared to traditional models, VBC requires significantly greater coordination and data sharing between patients and practitioners, presenting HIPAA compliance challenges to telehealth providers. To overcome these challenges, providers like RxLive utilize a variety of Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) for secure patient data sharing. As adoption of both VBC and telehealth continue, RxLive’s application must seamlessly integrate with an ever-growing network of HIEs and healthcare providers while maintaining HIPAA compliance.
Solution: Future-Proof Applications
Sourcetoad worked with RxLive to develop optimized workflows for patients to request consultations and submit information and pharmacists to evaluate and verify medications, side effects, lab results, and other patient data, ask follow-up questions, and provide recommendations. The team then mapped and documented the resulting data flows, including those to HIE’s and, leveraging internal HIPAA and SOC-2 compliance experience, identified potential compliance risk areas and developed a mitigation plan. The compliance plan is reviewed and updated regularly so new features, HIE integrations, and app maintenance can follow the plan to ensure continued compliance.
RxLive’s platform connects pharmacists and patients in a secure, private, and personal way. The app offers providers and patients the technology-based convenience and data-driven decision-making that today’s consumers expect and demand. The impact of the company’s solutions can be seen in lower drug costs, reduction in inappropriate drug use, and decreased hospital admissions for patients working with RxLive pharmacists.
